چکیده
Abstract To further our knowledge of the basis wing-spreading behavior cormorants, we compared feathers cormorants with a diving and dabbling duck. Only cormorant shows division into closed vane next to rhachis an open in periphery feather. Macroscopically, uropygial gland Great Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax carbo ) is bilobed, papilla wears circlet type I. Histologically, consists tightly packed glandular tubules separated by internal septa. These can be divided three zones based on their laminar appearance. They transition secretion-filled ducts that lead papilla. There no central storage chamber. By contrast, rock pigeon Columba livia contains large chamber, tissue limited gland. Thus, histological organization similar many other aquatic birds. elucidate complex structure, additionally reconstructed three-dimensionally.

In-air hearing of the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)
Many aquatic birds use sounds extensively for in-air communication. Regardless of this, we know very little about their hearing abilities. The in-air audiogram of a male adult great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was determined using psychophysical methods (method of constants). Hearing thresholds were derived using pure tones of five different frequencies. The lowest threshold was at 2 kHz: 1...
متن کاملScreening of protozoan and microsporidian parasites in feces of great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)
The global population of great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo L.) is on the rise. These birds, characterized by rapid metabolism, can deposit large quantities of feces, and because they breed on the land but forage on water, both terrestrial and aquatic environments can be simultaneously affected by their activities. The contribution of great cormorants in the dispersal of bacterial and viral ...
متن کاملPurification, crystallization, preliminary X-ray diffraction and molecular-replacement studies of great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) haemoglobin
Haemoglobin is the iron-containing oxygen-transport metalloprotein that is present in the red blood cells of all vertebrates. In recent decades, there has been substantial interest in attempting to understand the structural basis and functional diversity of avian haemoglobins. Towards this end, purification, crystallization, preliminary X-ray diffraction and molecular-replacement studies have b...
متن کاملRelationships between bird morphology and prey selection in two sympatric Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo subspecies during winter
Fonteneau et al. – 2009 – Relationships between bird morphology and prey selection in two sympatric Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo subspecies during winter. Abstract Variation in bird morphology (notably sex size dimorphism) has been suggested to contribute to differences in food use between individuals. We explore the hypothesis of food partitioning (diet overlap and prey size selection) ...
متن کاملPrey detection by great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) in clear and in turbid water.
The scattering and absorption of light by water molecules and by suspended and dissolved matter (turbidity) degrade image transmission and, thus, underwater perception. We tested the effects on visual detection of prey size and distance (affecting apparent prey size) and of low-level water turbidity in hand-reared great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) diving for natural prey (fish) in...
